May 2009

Happy Spring!

In Reading, we are completing a novel called Owls in the Family. We will take a final test on this book, next week. We will not have a book report for May, as it is busy for everyone.

In Math, we are studying rate charts and price per unit. We are also studying for an end of year test, which I will send home for you to review with their beginning of the year test.

In English, we finished up our autobiography as a last writing project. The students have become such writers! I am very proud of this assignment and had goosebumps just reading through most of them. Thank you, parents, for your assistance in helping with the typing.

In Spelling, the last week of testing will be May 11th.

In Arizona, we are learning about the government...local, state and national. We are learning the three branches of government.

In Science, we are learning about rockets and flight information.

As I reflect over this year, I would like to say I am very proud of the accomplishments this class gained. I am hopeful the AIMS scores will show large improvements. I am basing this on the great progress this class made from MAP testing in the computer lab. AIMS testing results may not make it by the end of the year, in which case I will send home the results at the beginning of fifth grade.

Our class ran very smoothly this year. It has been an asset to have 11 very dependable volunteers in our classroom and one student teacher. I would like to especially acknowledge the following people for consistently helping our classroom. Thank you so very much!

Mrs. Vasilopulos

Mrs. Orth

Mrs. Montoya

Mrs. Miville

Mrs. Heritage

Mrs. Domingo

Mrs. Conklin

Mrs. Cherrington

April 2009

Happy April! ...already?!

This is the month of AIMS testing. Hopefully you have been getting some notes about this, but if not I have outlined the testing schedule below. It would be really helpful if you would send in a snack for your child on these days. If you do not remember, I will have some in the classroom.

The following are some academics that are occuring in our classroom:

In Math, we are finishing up with flips, slides and turns and adding negative numbers. We will move on to weights and volume. Weights will include the standard and metric units, such as grams, kilograms, pounds and tons. In Spelling, we are including lessons such as irregular verbs, suffixes, ect. We are currently on paragraph testing. The paragraph is always given on Monday and the test is always on Friday. In Reading, we are reading fantasy stories such as Jumanji. We will discriminate between fantasy and reality. We will also learn skills such as possessive pronouns, more commas and comprehension. Our last book report is April 30th. Students will have a choice from a list on how they want to do the last book report. Ask your child about this list. In Science, we will do experiments on erosion. In Arizona, we will talk about Arizona's economy and Arizona's industries. In Writing, we will pursue our last writing assignment which is an autobiography. In the next few days, I will be sending home a questionaire about information on your child as a baby. Due to some personal information, the autobiography will only be shared if your child would like it shared.

As we move toward the end of the year, I am having to make decisions on what to do for the last day of school. Parents, it would be very helpful if you would look at the questionaire and submit. I know the economy will be a part of everyone's decision so I would like your input. Thanks, in advance, for this. The link is:

Our class continues to work and progress every day. Ms. Ajello, our student teacher, is slowly moving out of teaching and I will be resuming my teaching. Thank you all for your support on this. It has been very effective this year, as I was able to work with individual students.

Questions for students:
1. What is the difference between a biography and autobiography?
2. How many pounds are in 1 ton?
3. What is land erosion?

March 2009

Happy Spring!

The following are some things that will be happening in Mrs. Wilson's class for the month of March:

Reading: We are now involved in a novel unit titled Snow Treasure. This is a story set in Norway during World War 11. The students will not only learn about the war, but the story does a lot of foreshadowing. (Giving hints of what is to come...predicting). The story also talks about Nazi soldiers invading Norway.

English: We are finishing up our Research Papers. They are due March 2. We spent almost 2 months on this project and the final product is amazing to me. The students learned quality information about their subject. More importantly, they learned to take notes, turn notes into paragraphs, sequencing, paragraphing, topic sentences, and grammar. I feel this was a great culmination of academics. It also sets the basic foundation for writing a paper. I worked with EVERY student individually. I am very proud of this accomplishment.
In the month of March, we will concentrate on more six traits of writing to get ready for our AIMS writing test coming up at the end of this month.

Spelling: We continue with our normal routine in spelling. Generally speaking, this class does a great job in spelling.

Math: We finished Perimeter and Area. We have moved on to Fractions, Decimals and Percents. Students should recognize that 1/5.... .20 .....20% all mean the same amount.
We will also learn how to multiply and divide decimals.

Social Studies: In Arizona, we are learning about Modern Arizona and earning a living in these economic times.

Science: All science will be dedicated to Caves, bats and information about Kartchner, our field trip.

Ms. Ajello, our student teacher, has been teaching full time. She has another 2 weeks to go. This has worked out to be a great advantage to our classroom. This gives me time to work with your child individually. I am making an effort to work with EACH child on a weakness or improve a strength. It may be handwriting, getting ready for the upcoming Math test or tutoring a previous math skill. It may be reading skills. Ask your child what I worked on with your child.
Parents if you want input on this, be sure to contact me.

Students:

1. What does "bacon" look like when we talk about caves?
2. What does the letter "B" look like on a 3/4 turn?
3. What is echolocation?

Happy Valentine's Day! February

Hello! Happy February! The following are some things that are happening in Mrs. Wilson's fourth grade class.

Reading: We continue to read a story a week and do various related skills. This week, we worked on combining sentences together to make longer and more fluent sentences.
Math: We have finished fractions. I am proud that most of the class was successful on this difficult test. Next, we will move on to perimeter and area.
English: We are working on research. To date, we are still taking notes, but this week I will show the students how to turn the notes into interesting sentences and paragraphs. I appreciate your support in helping to get your child information.
Spelling: Tests continue to be Friday. We practice with worksheets and drill during the week.
Social Studies: Our studies continue with Arizona. This month we are learning about transportation and communication in Arizona. When we finish a chapter, we take a test. Students are not allowed to use their books for tests. Instead, I give them study notes in which they are to study and prepare for a test.
Science: We will start weather. Students will learn about cold fronts and various weather measuring devices. I also did a classroom Science Fair with the class. We will enter our project in the Science Fair. During this time, students learned how to make and enter a Science Fair project. I also sent home 3 pages of ideas for a Science project. The Science Fair is optional, but if a student enters the Science Fair I will increase their final Science grade by one letter grade.

Due to a budget shortfall, a letter was sent home for families to donate $25.00 to our school if possible. Our class could use some glue sticks and cap erasers if you would like to make a class donation. Thank you, in advance, for any help.

Questions:
1. What is a cold front?
2. Name one reason Arizona's population has increased?
3. What is 2/3 of 15?

January 2009

Happy New Year...2009!

We are back to school again with many academic responsibilities! We started a research paper, in which a parent letter was sent home to explain the students responsibilities. The class is mostly very excited to start this. They often complain when research time is over. I am impressed with how much they already have learned. The entire project is due March 2. It will be a major part of their language grade. We are also continuing the six traits of writing.

In Math, we started fractions. The students are expected to know equivalent fractions, such as 3/4 is the same as 6/8. We will have many days to work with manipulates and blocks to get this message across.

Spelling continues with 20 or more words. Tests continue to be on Friday. Best of luck to Annabel and Abrielle who were selected from my class to participate in the spelling bee due to a high percentages in spelling work.

Reading continues with the monthly expectations of book reports. At the end of January, the students will complete a cereal box book report. I am continuing to help your child select books to read, increasing the length and depth each time. We read stories in class with skills that go with each lesson.

In Arizona, we are learning about Territorial Days and in Science we are studying mimicry, mutualism and camouflage. The Science Fair is in February. I am encouraging all who enter, but it is optional. If a student enters the science fair and shares the project with our class, they will receive one letter grade above where they are currently. For example, if a child has a "B" average, after the child enters the science fair and it is completed correctly, the student will receive an "A" for the final average. In December, our class completed a classroom science fair project. Therefore, your child was taught how to complete a project. For the month of January, I will give our classroom many science ideas and project ideas to enter the fair.

Ms. Ajello, a University of Arizona student, has joined our classroom. She will learn how to become a teacher through myself and your children. She will eventually take on many of the teaching responsibilities all approved by me. I am excited for even more help in our classroom. Welcome Ms. Ajello!!!

Thank you all for your holiday gifts, cards and expressions that went with the month of December. I am overwhelmed at your generosity. I remain loyal to my job and your children in making this a successful year for them. Please contact me with any of your concerns.

Sincerely,

Sandy Wilson

Students: Can you answer these questions?

1. What is mutualism?

2. Tell one difference of school today and in the territorial days.

3. Give an equivalent fraction for 4/6.

Happy Holidays....December 2008

The following are some activities we will do in the month of December:

In Reading, we are finishing up our Independent Reading Project. Your child learned to summarize, to identify the purpose of writing, identifying 1st person and new vocabulary words.
They worked independently and in groups. They identified the climax of the story. We will switch to a story per week and learn new skills for the rest of the month.
In Spelling, we are back to a list of 20 words. Some children joined the bonus club and have 25 words. Each spelling list has a lesson for the week.
In English, we are still writing. This week we will learn about friendly letters and business letters. We will also study adjectives.
In Math, we are finishing up long division. We will move on to multiplication and division story problems with remainders and what to do with remainders in a story problem. We will also learn to measure angles with a protractor.
In Arizona, we are learning about the Gadsden Purchase which made the Tucson area a part of the United States.
In Science, we will begin a unit on erosion.

Student/ Parent Questions:
1. What is a remainder in math?
2. What is the Gadsden Purchase?
3. What does it mean when I say author's purpose for writing a story?

As I mentioned last month, our class is in good rountine and I am able to focus on problems and challenges with individual children. Parents, please write or call if you have suggestions and frustrations that I am not aware of and would like to discuss. I have volunteered to have a University of Arizona student teacher start in January. This will compliment our class with new ideas and learning.

November...Happy Turkey Day!

In case you do not know, I am updating this blog at the beginning of every month. Your child's grades will be updated weekly. Please let me know if you cannot view your child's grades on my web site.

The past month in October, students were asked to do something at school that is above and beyond what they would normally do. This could be academically, socially or physically. The reward was an "eyeball" (rubber bouncing ball). Ask your child how they received their eyeball.

The following will be some things going on in Mrs. Wilson's class for November:

In Math, I sent home the answers to study link chapters 5 and 6. Make sure you ask your child for this, as it is for parents only. We will be learning about large multiplication. The Everyday Math teaches to multiply with something called the "Lattice Method". I will eventually teach this, but I will spend a longer amount of time teaching the traditional method of multiplication. I have eight students who have not passed their multiplication timed test. Ask your child about this. December 1 will be the deadline to finish the "mad minutes" or they will receive a falling grade for a multiplication test. We will also spend a bit of time on rounding numbers.
Students: What is 25 X 32?
In Reading, the students will do something called an Independent Project. Your child will be given a book to read in class and will have to do all work in class that goes with the project. Ask your child what book they are reading for this project. The book report for November/ December will be a power point presentation which I will teach in computer lab.
In Spelling, we will continue the paragraph tests for the month of November and then switch back to the 20 word list. The paragraph test is a nice change of pace and students must remember to use capitals, period, indenting, commas, and apostrophes. We will NOT have a spelling test during Thanksgiving week due to a short week.
In Language we will learn about action verbs and linking verbs. We will also spend a good part of the month on writing. I will focus on word choice and fluency(making sentences flow with transitional words.)
Students: Give Mrs. Wilson 3 great descriptive words.
In Arizona, we will study Mountain Men and all that they contributed to Arizona's history.
In Science, we will study about how to do an experiment. We will learn to graph results and learn about a variable. I will also show the students how they can do a project for the science fair.
Students: What is a variable in a science experiment?

I feel like my class is finally in a routine and things are running smoothly. We work hard every day and the learning is really evident. I have 13 parent volunteers that help in our classroom. Thank you volunteers and thank you parents for your support at home with the homework. Together we are off to making a successful fourth grade year.
